In southern Europe, many of the major populated areas are on bodies of water. Examples of these are Lisbon, Madrid, Athens, Belgrade, Rome, Ljubljana, and Zagreb. People settled on bodies of water due to the ease of transportation and the many natural resources that are near water. These cities are also port cities where goods are transported by river or by sea. This, however has a negative impact on the environment because of all of the industrial activity in these cities, which allows pollution of these coastal areas and rivers.

The first map is a current map, while the second is a map of Southern Europe before World War 1. There are two countries in Pre-WWI Europe that have split. Pre-WWI Serbia is now Serbia and Macedonia. The portion of the former Austria-Hungary that is in southern Europe is now Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. These borders have changed first due to the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, after which Serbia and portions of Austria-Hungary formed Yugoslavia. Second, borders changed again due to the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991.
