Unemployment is one major problem in Southern Europe. For example, both Spain and Greece currently have unemployment rates above 20%. The unemployment is primarily due to the Recession of 2008, in which many people lost jobs. The effects of unemployment are that many people will have to live in poverty. Also, many people may migrate to different countries to look for jobs.
Poverty
Poverty is a big problem for many countries in Southern Europe, including Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. Poverty in these areas is mainly caused by the social imbalances, such as unequal opportunities to education and health services. The result of poverty is that many people will suffer economic hardships. Additionally, homelessness and crime increases.
Immigration A surge of immigrants is affecting many countries in Souther Europe. The immigration is caused by refugees trying to escape conflicts in Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq migrating to countries including Malta, Italy, and Greece. As a result, these countries must decide how to resettle these refugees, as well as how to prepare for future immigrants.
